Canelo vs Chavez Jr promises for Mexican fireworks on the week of Cinco De Mayo.
Speaking on Twitter during the week Canelo said:
“I hope this coming May 6 to see my fight in the @TMobileArena in Las Vegas.
#teamcanelo”
Canelo Alvarez
Well, he’s got his wish, after his promoters Golden Boy Promotions announced that the fight will indeed take place at the venue, instead of in Texas like some thought it might do.
It should offer little surprise that Canelo wanted the T-Mobile Arena, really, as it proved a happy stomping ground for him last May when it first opened and took on it’s first big time boxing event.
The fight was of course Canelo’s destruction of the UK’s Amir Khan with a punch that won knockout of the year by Ring Magazine.
Fast forward on into 2017 and Canelo has a much bigger, physically stronger foe to deal with than Khan next up.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has not fought elite level competition really since back in 2012, when he dropped a decision to Argentinian Sergio Martinez.
But he will enjoy perhaps a physical edge at least in terms of being the naturally bigger fighter in the fight, used to campaigning at higher weight classes than Canelo.
Some have suggested they doubt that the fight will even happen due to past instances where Chavez Jr has failed to make the weight.
However with a rumored $1 million dollar fine apparently in the terms of the fight for either guy weighing in per pound over the limit, this would be a costly exercise.
Stylistically it promises to be one hell of a ding dong.
Lets hope Canelo vs Chavez Jr definitely happens come May.
