Could a Julius Indongo vs Terence Crawford world title unification be on the cards next up? A look at how it could play out.
Saturday night in Glasgow saw the ever-defiant veteran Ricky Burns go out on his shield. Done so against the virtually unknown challenger and champion from Namibia Julius Indongo.
Over the course of 12 excruciating rounds Ingongo’s height and reach advantage proved to be too much.
Burns often found himself fumbling forward in an attempt to catch his slippery, lengthier opponent. Indongo ended up dominating virtually all night long.
I scored the contest a complete shut-out 120-108.
After what potentially could be a star-making performance, boxing fans and critics alike seem to be of the opinion Indongo needs to be tested at the highest level possible.
At 140 pounds that of course means a unification with fellow Burns foe Terence Crawford. A Julius Indongo vs Terence Crawford could make a lot of sense.
Between them Crawford and Indongo hold all four of the major belts in the division. Indongo also holds the IBO title.
Meaning if the pair were to meet it would be to crown and undisputed champion. The ultimate prize for any aspiring fighter.
An accomplishment that seems to be all too rare these days.
Crawford is at this moment in time in a far higher standing in the sport. At least in terms of accomplishments and opponents.
Julius Indongo vs Terence Crawford Next Up?
Indongo’s dominance of Burns have some already speculating on the fight. Some have even suggested he may be able to match the calibre of Nabraska’s favourite fighting son.
Perhaps could even pull off a huge upset. It’s difficult to deny the impressiveness of Indongo’s performance against Burns.
His snap-fast jab was able to catch the much slower Burns seemingly at will. While he was also able to hurt the normally granite-chinned Scotsman with heavy southpaw left hands.
The same left hand which launched him into world level.
Terence Crawford must first defend his titles against the hard-hitting Felix Diaz at Madison Square Garden in a few weeks time.
It’s a fight he’s expected to win comfortably. But as we well know nothing in this sport is a guaranteed victory.
Before Crawford moves on to gain superstar status against some potentially massive names perhaps the unification with Indongo is the most sensible decision.
It would cement his status as the division’s top draw while adding one of the richest prizes in boxing to his collection.
Much like Crawford before him Julius Indongo could be a star in the making.
His crowning moment could come in the form of an unexpected, undisputed championship victory against a man currently recognised as one of the best in the world:
Julius Indongo vs Terence Crawford in a unification is something we’d like to see. What do you think? Feel free to comment and share.
