The Joshua vs Klitschko PPV buys are in and they’ve absolutely obliterated the previous records for boxing in the UK with ease.
We always knew the Joshua vs Klitschko PPV numbers were going to be big, but good Lord, they make for gargantuan reading since they’ve been released.
Promoter to Anthony Joshua Eddie Hearn has revealed to the BBC that the event sold over 1.5 million buys in the UK alone (at £20 or $26 US approx each in the UK).
That smashes the previous records of Mayweather vs Pacquiao, Mayweather vs Hatton and Froch vs Groves II which are understood to be the UK’s other all time records.
That’s quite the number. It is also thought that early figures for viewing on TV network RTL in Germany where Klitschko is popular – are over the 10 million mark.
From a US perspective, the event pulled 659,000 viewers live on Showtime in the middle of the afternoon.
A very big number considering the US TV deal was not sorted out until a couple of weeks before the fight, the fact that Joshua is still building his star there and the fact it was in the middle of the afternoon.
HBO who showed the event on tape delay in the evening in the US drew 890,000 viewers at peak levels. Huge numbers for a non-live show on a premium subscription service.
The conclusion overall? A massive worldwide event for the sport of boxing, that’s what.
Anthony Joshua will be flying even higher than he already is now after those titanic Joshua vs Klitschko PPV buys results.
