Boxing promoter Kalle Sauerland gives his post-fight analysis after seeing his fight retain his WBC cruiserweight world title.
Latvian Mairis Briedis successfully defended his belt this weekend in his home country against Irish-Cuban challenger Mike Perez.
Briedis got the unanimous decision in the end after landing some painful right hands and uppercuts on a Perez who although kept coming forward and kept walking into big shots on the night in what was a scrappy but entertaining fight.
The win put Briedis through to the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series where the eventual winner will receive the Muhammad Ali trophy.
Speaking after this fight, his promoter Kalle Sauerland gave his post-fight thoughts on what he saw:
“I think there was some great action. It was a very physical fight. It’s often the case when you have a regular against a southpaw, that there can be holding. But I think there was a lot of clean punches by both sides.”
He added:
“Mairis down the stretch for me was where he really took control of the fight. I think the early rounds there were a lot of rounds that you could give either away. But Mairius for me after the 5th or 6th round showed the better footwork. He worked out Perez’ movement. I thought he used the uppercut very, very well – to great effect. I think Perez played his part as well in a great fight.”
The win saw Briedis improve his pro boxing record to 23-0-18KO.
