The GGG vs Canelo rematch will definitely take place immediately next for both fighters it has been officially confirmed.
The latest convention held by the World Boxing Council took place earlier today in Baku. The fifth event of his type on a yearly basis for the WBC now.
Some significant figures from world boxing were present including the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Evander Holyfield, to name just a couple.
There were a number of topics discussed at the convention both past and present.
From a modern day perspective, safety of boxers and in particular the WBC ‘Clean Boxing Program’ in tandem with anti-doping agency VADA were highlighted.
Then came the news that boxing fans were perhaps most keen to hear.
The WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that from his organisation’s standpoint they will be ordering an immediate GGG vs Canelo rematch next up to take place.
Following the pair’s draw last time out in Las Vegas in September just gone, middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin retained all his 160lbs titles that include the WBC, IBO, IBF and WBA world title belts.
There has been no date as to when the GGG vs Canelo rematch has been forthcoming as of yet, but it is thought that a likely May 2018 date is being targeted due to the popularity of Mexican boxing holidays around the date where Canelo can attract more interest from his native fans.
