The Alberto Machado vs Corrales knockout came in the 8th round live on HBO and when it did, that’s all she wrote, as they say.
An upset was sprung last night on the Golden Boy card in Verona when Alberto Machado tore up the pre-fight script to pick himself up off the floor to go on to then knock out Jezreel Corrales.
The win added another world title to the proud fighting country of Puerto Rico, as Machado became the latest Puerto Rican warrior to capture world honors in recent times.
Early on in the fight Corrales looked to have the upper hand with his superior movement and boxing IQ and dropped Machado with a big overhand left in round 5.
The battle of the southpaws was just warming up, however.
By the time the 8th round rolled around something big was about to happen. The two exchanged massive left hands but one clearly did more damage:

Quite the blow to secure a new WBA super-featherweight world champion at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona.
Following the bout Corrales called for a rematch straight away. The win improved Machado’s professional boxing record to 19-0-16KO.
