Olympic Gold medallist and former world champion James DeGale speaks the morning after the night before – in the upset of the year in boxing.
Upset of the year for 2018 in boxing could well go to Caleb Truax of the US this weekend who came to former IBF 168lbs title holder James DeGale’s back yard of London in the UK – and tore away the belt from him on a close, hard-fought points decision.
It was the right result in the end but one no one, to a man, other than Truax and his team, saw it coming beforehand.
DeGale has had to deal with numerous heckles from rivals and fellow fighters since losing his world title but has now taken to his social media platforms to speak on the loss for the first time:
Devastated with my performance last night. Feel like Ive let everyone down – myself, my family, friends and fans. I dont want 2 be in any other position than No1 so going to take some time out 2 reflect and make some decisions goin forward.Thank u all for your love & support ??

It will be interesting to see what those decisions will be in the new year. DeGale has already made a number of changes in 2017 – namely changing promoter from Eddie Hearn to Frank Warren.
Also where he will base himself will be interesting to see in 2018.
Some have mentioned that he should have stayed in the UK to fight as opposed to travel to the US in recent years, where his star and momentum seems to have stagnated at times.
Here is what DeGale said straight after the bout last night:
