Freddie Roach rips Mayweather speculation of the American fighting in MMA for the UFC and reacts to reports that his fighter Manny Pacquiao could face Conor McGregor in a boxing match.
Both stories instinctively seemed like bull**** when they broke but then again, in a year where Floyd Mayweather actually did fight Conor McGregor in a boxing match, perhaps it’s best to take everything with a pinch of salt in the fight business these days – as anything seems possible nowadays.
Freddie Roach is well-known as one of the best coaches in boxing of all time and has pretty much seen it all over his long career, but even Freddie forces a chuckle when he hears reports of Mayweather fighting in the UFC.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Roach said:
“I think he’d get his a** kicked. He can’t fu***** wrestle. Come on man?”
On how long it would take Mayweather to get up to speed in MMA, he added:
“Five years.”
He then went on to dismiss reports that Pacquiao will fight McGregor in a boxing match in 2018:
“Not that I know of. I’ve talked to Arum and Arum says it’s not true. We still have two fights left with him (promoter Bob Arum).
On who he’d like to see Pacquiao in with next:
I’d like to see a rematch with (Jeff) Horn.”
Roach has seen himself involved in both boxing and MMA in recent times from a trainer perspective.
This year he trained GSP upon his return to win the UFC middleweight title of which Roach coached the champion on his boxing technique in the run up to the victory.
