With 2017 virtually behind us we can all look back on what has been a thoroughly enjoyable year in the boxing world. In reflection, we have the chance to look back and examine our favourite fights, knockouts and performances. And, even though we have twelve months of content to sift through and examine, one performance in particular, in my mind, stands out above the rest.
Billy Joe Saunders took on David Lemieux mere days ago, yet it’s clear for all to see it was the most dominant performance over a truly powerful and talented fighter of the entire year. So much so that news of Saunders’ dominance slowly but surely began seeping out of the confined boxing community and leaked out into the masses.
On his podcast UFC commentator and all-round fight fan Joe Rogan heaped mounds of compliments and praise onto the British fighter after outclassing Lemieux in front of his home crowd:
In the video Rogan, who is a great lover of the boxing game, referrers to Saunders’ performance as a “work of art” and even contemplates the idea of Saunders causing serious problems to the two current middleweight kingpins – Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Rogan is also quick to point out that very few people who are unfamiliar with the inner goings-on in boxing have actually heard of the sensational Billy Joe. With this performance, and hopefully many more like it to come, this may end up getting turned on it’s head.
