WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders thinks Gennady Golovkin is up against it for a number of reasons in his rematch with Canelo Alvarez.
The first fight between the pair last September caused global headlines when it was awarded a draw and one scorecard in particular from one judge, caused significant controversy.
The rematch is now on for May 5th with a location to be confirmed soon.
Speaking to Michelle Phelps of Behind The Gloves, Saunders said ‘GGG’ has it all to do in the rematch:
“I personally think it’s a tough job for Golovkin because first of all he’s got to beat Canelo. Then he’s got to beat the judges and the ref. Then Oscar De La Hoya (Canelo’s promoter). It’s a hard job. It’s going to be a very hard job. I would love to see Golovkin do it but I’ve just got a feeling that they are going to shaft him out of the decision. Again.”
Saunders had been linked with Golovkin last year but due to the rematch between him and Canelo, he’s been forced to wait for his shot at the winner of the fight for later in the year.
Even then, it’s not totally clear that he’ll get the winner. There’s a good chance he won’t.
At any rate, Saunders first has to get past Martin Murray in his next bout this April/
