The Gennady Golovkin May 5 date is not out of the water just yet following the Canelo Alvarez fight falling through – but a rather underwhelming opponent appears to be in the frame now for the fight.
The fight if it does happen won’t be happening in Vegas however.
The Stub Hub Center in Carson California is the venue that is understood to be on hold if Golovkin can find an opponent in time who is willing to step in on late notice.
The fight if it does go ahead will also compete with a fight on ESPN the night before that will see Golden Boy prospect Ryan Garcia box as well as Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan co-headline.
That fight will happen on May 4th at the very same venue no less.
Now however it has emerged from Dan Rafael on ESPN that the following opponent is being finalized for Golovkin:
Not official yet but Golovkin and promoter Tom Loeffler moving toward finalizing a May 5 fight (on HBO at StubHub Center) for GGG vs. Vanes Martirosyan, a horrendous matchup. He hasn’t boxed in two years. He’s never fought as a middleweight. He’s coming… https://t.co/lONmWCfqJK

That certainly won’t be exciting many fight fans but at least if it does happen Golovkin will still get to box again relatively soon – with a view to a big fight happening surely in the summer time.
