The latest Golovkin vs Canelo rematch update has come today from one of the potential fight’s promoters – and it’s not looking good.
Initially there was a lot of optimism that the rescheduled rematch would take place this September after Canelo Alvarez served out a six month suspension for failing a drugs test.
However, in boxing, as it so often the case, things can change at the drop of a hat.
Now there has been reports that Golovkin wants a fifty-fifty split for the rematch whereas Canelo and his team are still looking for a 65-35 split, reportedly.
Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya released the following update on social media a short time ago:
@Canelo is moving on, the only possible way he fights @GGGBoxing in September is on same terms we agreed on after the first fight. #danieljacobs #charlo #sounders
— Oscar De La Hoya (@OscarDeLaHoya) May 28, 2018
Presumably at the end there he’s referring to WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.
At any rate, this doesn’t look good. At all.
Anything less than a Golovkin vs Canelo rematch will come as a massive disappointment to boxing fans all over the world, no question about it.
