It was confirmed earlier on today, following reports coming out of the Ukraine last week, that the WBC will sanction a high-profile exhibition rematch between Vitali Klitschko and Lennox Lewis later this year.
The pair fought fifteen years ago in a fight that was stopped inside the distance by Lewis following a horrific cut endured to former WBC champion Klitschko.
It was to be the last fight of Lewis’ career and the two have since remained healthy rivals after what many believed was the fight to have been stopped too early at the time.
They’ll now get a rematch of sorts in an exhibition this September in the Ukraine where Klitschko is now a high-profile politician.
Ahead of the fight Lewis sent the following tonight to Klitschko (translated to English):
“I hope to see you in my Undisputed evening in London on September 6. If not, I’ll see you in Kiev, my friend.”
Clearly good friends these days as well as healthy rivals, don’t expect too many heavy bombs thrown in their exhibition bout.
That said, boxing fans seem to be absolutely buzzing about the news recently.
It will certainly be an intriguing watch if nothing else between two legends of the ring.
