Boxing manager Shelly Finkel is in Belfast this weekend accompanying his fighter WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder who will commentate on tonight’s Tyson Fury fight.
Shelly Finkel is perhaps outside of Bob Arum and Frank Warren, the most experienced man operating in boxing today.
He has been around the game forever, brokered big fights and has been a part of the careers of some of the sport’s greatest fighters.
Over the last number of months it has been well documented that ongoing talks between him and Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, did not go anywhere.
Multiple attempts were made by both sides to make a Joshua vs Wilder heavyweight super fight with conflicting information coming out of various outlets that turned the negotiations into a major talking point in themselves.
We as fans will not be seeing a Joshua vs Wilder anytime soon and Shelly has confirmed in various places that they will not fight Joshua next April 13th at Wembley Stadium in London next year, due to in his opinion, Joshua and his team not wanting the fight with Wilder.
In a really excellent piece of journalism by Rob Tedbutt of Boxing Social YouTube (hat tip), Shelly sat down on camera to give his full version of events and side of what happened in the negotiations:
