Donnie Nietes Looking To Emulate Pacquiao and Donaire

Three-weight world champion Donnie Nietes takes on fellow Filipino Aston Palicte next weekend in Super Fly 3 as he bids to become a four weight world champion.

The WBO super-flyweight title will be on the line and Nietes is looking to follow in the footsteps of his hugely successful boxing countrymen Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire.

Indeed, this appears to be his primary motivation in the fight.

Speaking to Xicana Boxing, Nietes said:

“It would be an achievement to become well-known like Noinito Donaire and Manny Pacquiao, four division and eight division world champions.”

He added:

“For this fight we both have hunger (me and my opponent). My goal is to become four-weight world champion, whereas my opponent is the younger man looking to become champion.”

On fighting a fellow Filipino he said:

“I would have rather fought another nationality, so it’s tough. Maybe this is the last time I will fight a fellow Filipino.”

The bout promises to be an intriguing one in Nietes is facing a taller, younger and stronger man in Aston Palicte next weekend.

So he’ll certainly have his hands full if he wants to become a four-weight world champion.

The match will take place in California as part of the Super Fly 3 card that goes out live on HBO on the night.
