Father and trainer of Danny Garcia, Angel Garcia was clearly very emotional after his son’s defeat this weekend to Shawn Porter in New York.
Porter won a unanimous points decision to claim the WBC welterweight title at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
After the fight an emotional Danny Garcia could barely put into words his disappointment. His father and coach was clearly the same.
Speaking to AB Boxing News after the fight, Angel said:
“I had Danny winning all the first seven rounds. He didn’t do nothing. He started becoming aggressive in the late rounds, slugging and stuff. That’s not boxing bro. I thought Danny won eight rounds, nine rounds easy.”
He added:
“He (Porter) didn’t do s*** bro. All the s*** was headbutts bro. I thought Danny pulled it off but that’s politics bro. I don’t know if New York like us. Not the people, the New York Commission. I don’t think they f****** like us.”
Whether or not a rematch happens next year remains to be seen as IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence is thought to be in the running for a unification fight with Porter next up.
There’s plenty of options out there for Garcia at welterweight in the grand scheme of things, it’s just a case of getting confidence back one would have thought for his next fight.
