The North East boxing scheme is booming once again, and the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle will begin rocking when Sunderland favourite Glenn Foot looks to defend his Commonwealth Super Lightweight title, while also capturing a Lord Lonsdale belt at the second time of asking.

But another well-supported fighter looks to take ownership of the British title for a first time, when Robbie Davies Jr returns from avenging his one and only career loss.

Davies 16-1(12KO’s) was overcome July last year when Michal Syrowatka (L TKO 12 & W TKO 12) stopped him in the 12th of an epic battle. But revenge was dished out in his Liverpool hometown when he stopped the Polish fighter in the same round this March.

Now the heavy hitting and exciting Davies is set against another tough-as-nails opponent in former Prizefighter champion, Foot.

Foot’s last defeat came in a bitter rivalry with Josh Leather (L UD 12) from Middlesbrough, but came within moments of starching his inexperienced foe early on. But Leather re-grouped and his youth served him well as he eked out a close decision win. He has also been defeated on points by the slick Akeem Ennis Brown (L MD 10), but his style ensured that was the toughest night of Brown’s career thus far.

If suckered into a scrap with Foot – like unbeaten Jason Easton (W TKO 9) was in March – then this could be a repeat of that first meeting with Syrowatka for Davies.

But that night taught Davies a lot about himself in the ring, and also exposed him to some home truths about how tough the fight game can be when you fail to follow a game plan.

Foot 22-3(7KO’s) will come flying out of the gates, and could have Davies in some early trouble. But the pick is for Davies to stun the champion at some point around the 4th, and from then on taking a foothold in the contest.

Dicing between trading and boxing, Davies will find the right balance, and while never in complete control, will leave the ring with a belt over each shoulder following a unanimous decision win.
