Canelo Alvarez signed the biggest contract in sports this week and his old rival Floyd Mayweather took shots at him afterwards saying he can make the amount his contract is worth in one night.
The contract is a minimum guarantee of $365 million over 11 fights which could rise to more depending on the number of subscribers Canelo drives for DAZN.
As well as other incentives for him like sponsorship, endorsements and no doubt other money makers for the Mexican boxing star.
It is over five years which in itself is almost unprecedented in sports in terms of making such a long-term commitments to a fighter, and indeed a sport like boxing.
Such is DAZN’s backing of boxing this year.
Speaking in a media scrum to members of the media on Floyd Mayweather’s pot shot at his new contract on Instagram, Canelo said:
“I’m not the type of person who’s going to put things on Twitter or Instagram to offend people. If you want to make the fight deal with me directly.”
He added:
“No it didn’t surprised me. I think it bugged him. If it bugged him it’s all his problem. In this life everyone deserve’s what they get. I don’t know why because I defeated him in that aspect (the new contract with DAZN).”
The first fight of the contract kicks off up at 168lbs on December 15th against the UK’s Rocky Fielding.
