In recent weeks promoter Eddie Hearn was linked with signing Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao to a promotional contract to box on streaming platform DAZN but Pacquiao instead decided to go a different route.
Pacquiao was looking at a fight with Amir Khan who is promoted by Hearn but with the lure of a possible Floyd Mayweather rematch with Haymon, he instead signed with Haymon in an advisory contract.
Haymon also manages and advises many of the world’s top welterweights at the moment.
Speaking to Fight Hype on the news Hearn gave his reaction:
“We talked. The main problem for Manny is the US tax situation in America and I don’t know how that’s going to be solvable. All our talks were around an Amir Khan fight and it appeared that Manny didn’t really want the Amir Khan fight, so those talks stopped there really to be honest. I can see why he’d sign with Haymon because of his pull in the welterweight division. A bit like our pull in the middleweight division. Like, if you’re a middleweight why would you fight on Showtime? If you’re a welterweight, you could say the same thing about fighting on DAZN. So I’m not surprised. It’s an advisory appointment not a promotional appointment. But if he’s going to fight Broner and also the carrot is there to fight Mayweather, then Haymon is the place to be.”
Pacquiao next will face Adrien Broner this coming January with a date and venue to be announced.
