The Mexican holiday weekend is usually reserved for only the biggest fights in boxing every year and next year an early play has already being made for the date.
Traditionally over the years Floyd Mayweather pretty much owned the date and would fight on that weekend in Las Vegas every year.
But now that he’s retired from boxing, Canelo Alvarez who is Mexican anyway, pretty much lays claim to the coveted date.
In an interesting development today it has been revealed that a pro boxing event co-promoted by GGG Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions has been reserved at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on that date.
Even more interestingly is that DAZN have even been listed as the broadcaster / network to show the fight.
While nothing is confirmed, it’s pretty obvious that a Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez trilogy fight is being planned for the date but it should be noted that it could also just be a safety move.
For example, if Floyd Mayweather wanted to have a rematch with Manny Pacquiao that weekend he’ll now have to think again as the date’s now gone.
Canelo will kick off the first fight on his new deal with streaming service DAZN this weekend in New York when he takes on Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden.
