Its been some time now since Canelo lost to Floyd Mayweather who put on a boxing masterclass that night to out point the Mexican boxing star many years ago.
Since then Canelo has certainly improved as a fighter and this year proved to be his biggest yet in the sport culminating in a rematch victory over Gennady Golovkin and then getting the biggest deal in boxing.
An eleven fight deal worth $365 million minimum spread out over five years with DAZN.
Speaking to the folks at Fight Hype, fellow pound for pound star Mikey Garcia spoke on what has impressed him in Canelo since losing to Mayweather:
“His last fight he really did a lot. You did see improvements after every single fight. After the Mayweather fight you did see improvements from him fight after fight after fight. But it took him 2 or 3 years to become the fighter that he is now. I think that’s similar to me. He naturally has a talent, Canelo is skilled and polished but he can still become more polished — he can still work with it. With more experience he can settle down a little more, pick his punches better, better training with everything else will help. Maybe in 2 or 3 years he might be an even better fighter than now.”
As for now the front runner for Canelo’s next opponent appears to be middleweight champion Danny Jacobs in a unification fight back at 160lbs for Canelo.
