Errol Spence Recalls Sparring Floyd Mayweather

IBF welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr is gearing up for his latest defence next month when he takes on fellow pound for pound rated star Mikey Garcia.

Two undefeated fighters in their prime, in many ways, both fighters represent the new era of pound for pound talent breaking through in the sport following the recent end of the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao dominated era.

Errol Spence Jr knows Floyd Mayweather very well and towards the end of Mayweather’s pro career Spence sparred Mayweather in Las Vegas in many intense spars according to those who were there at the time.

Indeed, Spence still remembers them fondly and learned a lot from his time in the ring with the former pound for pound number one.

Speaking to EsNews, Spence said:

“Floyd is just smart man. I mean, like, you can always tell he’s thinking. He’s always thinking. You can’t take any time off. He’s always on target to land a punch. He’s always looking. You’re throwing at him — he’s always slipping. He’s still looking at you. He’s never turned away looking at you. It’s cat like reflexes to him. He just puts everything together. The dude is like perfect.”

These days Mayweather is now a promoter but still fights in exhibition bouts against limited opposition in fights that don’t go on his professional record but still generate a lot of interest and cash for ‘Money’ Mayweather.

Many thought that a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao would happen this year but lately talks of the rematch have died down completely.

As for Errol Spence, he takes on Mikey Garcia in Arlington, Texas on March 16th.
