Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is banging the drum this week ahead of his star fighter Canelo Alvarez’ next bout against Danny Jacobs on Cinco De Mayo in Vegas.
A good fight in its own right and one Jacobs should not be written off in, without doubt.
But not long ago De La Hoya floated the idea in the media that Canelo could even take on Floyd Mayweather in a rematch of their bout a few years back.
A fight that Mayweather one by easy unanimous points decision at the time.
Speaking to the media this week in an open press scrum De La Hoya was not joking and had the following to say to his old friend Floyd Mayweather:
“There’s a lot of money to be made. If he (Mayweather) wants to. Look, he’s retired but if he wants to come back there’s a lot of money to be made. The way you should have picked up the phone to make a fight with Ryan (Garcia) then pick up the phone to make a fight with Canelo.”
De La Hoya was referring to a failed approach recently from Mayweather to tempt one of De La Hoya’s other fighters Ryan Garcia with a cash offer to fight one of Mayweather’s fighters.
It was reported that De La Hoya issued Mayweather with a cease and desist letter from approaching Garcia moving forward without his promotional company’s understanding.
The usual fun and games in the world of boxing, really.
As for Canelo vs Mayweather, don’t expect a now 42 year old Floyd Mayweather to take that bait anytime soon.
