A welterweight super fight between pound for pound top dogs and welterweight champions Errol Spence and Terence Crawford could be a lot closer to happening in 2019 than many think now.
Despite boxing politics, the two fighters being signed to an adviser and promoter who despise one another, and the fact that both fight on different platforms — one of their handlers has now confirmed he will reach out to make the fight to the other side this month if his boxer wins his next bout.
Promoter of Terence Crawford, Bob Arum confirmed to Steve Kim and Mario Lopez that he will reach out to Spence’s advisor Al Haymon the Monday after the Amir Khan fight later this month (should Crawford beat Khan) to phone him personally to try to make the fight once and for all.
The two seldom speak to one another.
Good news and a turn of events that boxing fans will no doubt be both surprised by and happy about in equal measure.
For one guy in this instance to be the bigger man (Bob Arum) and to reach out to the other side (Al Haymon) is a breakthrough moment considering the level of intense dislike the two have one for another.
Also considering not long ago Arum was calling Haymon every name under the sun. Some of which were disgraceful comparing Haymon to the debilitating illness known as cancer.
He clearly understands this style of public abuse doesn’t work and appears to be willing to talk sensibly again to make the fight the boxing world is crying out for.
A bout that could very well see the winner call himself the best pound for pound boxer on Earth today.
