Former WBC super-middleweight world champion David Benavidez has lost his title outside the ring.
The undefeated 23-year-old Arizona fighter (22-0-19 KO) takes on Roamer Alexis Angulo tonight.
The bout will have the WBC title only on the line for Angulo.
This is due to Benavidez coming in 2.8 lbs over the championship weight.
Clearly unable to make weight and not appearing in optimal condition for the bout it must be said.
It hasn’t been received too well ahead of tonight’s Showtime card with many fight fans in fairness:
For balance, it is important to also point out that boxing’s return is still taking place during a very unusual time at the moment.
For the wider world that is.
Boxers are finding themselves in rare circumstances in terms of access to facilities to train and get the final few pounds off on fight week.
Between various bubbles and studios created where fighters have to isolate it is no doubt a challenging process.
Weight making is a daunting prospect at the best of times but even more so now.
No doubt this has had an effect on Benavidez’ preparation.
Alas, at just 23, he can surely use this as a learning experience moving forward.
