Vasyl Lomacehnko of the Ukraine is a modern day boxing genius — no doubt about that.
But for that small space where genius can occur in life, in any field, all things must be aligned at the right time.
This balance is a tricky one.
For Lomachenko, he’s always been a slow starter in his fights.
Downloading his opponent’s artillery and fight game in the early rounds before picking up the pace and exhibiting his fight skills.
A combination of a creative and engineering mind in the sweet science if you will.
However, against Teofimo Lopez in Vegas this past weekend he left it until the second half of the fight all together to get going.
A move that didn’t prove wise in the end.
Heavyweight boxing legend Lennox Lewis couldn’t understand it:
Reflectively, one Floyd Mayweather also used to start slow in a similar way to Lomachenko.
But after a few rounds his downloading and paying attention to what was around him, quietly, was always done.
One suspects we have not heard the last of Vasyl Lomachenko, mind you.
For now though — huge congrats to the new champion and in many ways the story of the year for boxing in 2020.
Teofimo Lopez.
