The boxing world is celebrating a new young star following this weekend in the form of Ryan Garcia.
A very young and certainly still a lot to work on fighter but nonetheless an exciting new talent to add to the lightweight mix.
What a division it is at the minute with the likes of Garcia, Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis all breaking through as emerging stars in the sport.
The joint Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year for 2020, Lopez, had the following to say after Garcia’s knockout of the UK’s Luke Campbell at the weekend:
No doubt some will agree and others will disagree.
The only way fans will get to see who really is the best is by all these hungry young fighters doing battle.
Garcia showed excellent speed and heart at the weekend to get up off the floor but still has a lot of flaws to work on in terms of defense, foot work and more.
Lopez on current form is probably rated as the best in the division by many but what Gervonta Davis did to Leo Santa Cruz last year puts him as number one in the eyes of many too.
Devin Haney will have something to say about all of the above of course.
Ryan Garcia became mandatory for his belt after the weekend.
In an ideal scenario they’d fight and Davis and Lopez would box with the winners of both bouts facing each other.
Now that would be some 2021 for the division if it were to happen.
All in all, great times for the new young fighters breaking through in the sport.
