Boom.
He’s back.
Pound for pound number one in boxing Canelo Alvarez made quick work tonight of his Turkish opponent Avni Yildirim.
His mandatory challenger at the end of the day.
Not much of a challenge for him in the end but he could only face who was put in front of him.
Yes, the opposition will be much better next up likely in the form of Billy Saunders of the UK.
For now though Alvarez did what he had to do:
(Hat tip DAZN Boxing Twitter)
Did the job.
That punch effectively ended the challenger.
His corner threw in the towel not long after.
Perhaps the mandatory challenger system needs to be looked at.
Forget that. It definitely should be.
We know this of course.
As we’ve said before though, the world title belts system is so screwed up in boxing that it might beyond repair.
Some will say the last time Canelo was pushed by a credible challenger was in 2019 by Danny Jacobs.
He’ll be challenged again next up, mind.
For now though congrats to Canelo on the win and congrats to opponent Avni Yildirim on the pay day.
