Devin Haney is no longer the full WBC champion it has been confirmed following his big fight with Ryan Garcia.
According to the WBC website team Haney requested to be put back to Champion in Recess.
This was granted by the WBC.
The reasons for this are unclear but there could be a few.
Haney said recently he might be taking a break from the sport and travelling for some time.
Before then re-matching Ryan Garcia next year when the Garcia ban of 1 year is over from boxing.
Of course team Haney could also be looking at other avenues to fight outside of the WBC as well.
He also may have not wanted to face his mandatory contender and instead may pursue a more difficult but bigger fight later this year.
Interesting development.
Most likely the reason for this was the recent purse bids won by Top Rank to stage Haney’s next fight.
Haney was not happy promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom did not bid so likely just gave up the WBC belt as was not a lucrative enough offer from Top Rank.
Recently Haney’s loss to Ryan Garcia was changed to a no-contest.
