Floyd “Money” Mayweather is revered for his unblemished 50-0 professional boxing record, often touted as one of the greatest to ever grace the sport. Rightly so too.
However, the myth of an entirely unbeaten career crumbles when you delve into his amateur days.
He lost plenty of times.
He credits losing in the Olympics to making him as a professional prize fighter.
Alas, before the multi-million dollar paychecks and the global fame, a young Mayweather faced defeat not once, not twice, but six times.
Mayweather’s Amateur Setbacks
- Martin Castillo: In 1994, Castillo handed Mayweather his first-ever loss in a closely contested bout.
- Carlos Navarro: Navarro, who later became a WBU World Champion, bested Mayweather in 1995.
- Noureddine Medjhoud: At the 1995 AIBA World Championships, Medjhoud secured a victory over the future boxing legend.
- Tigran Uzlyan: Mayweather faced another defeat against Uzlyan in Moscow in 1995.
- Augie Sanchez: Sanchez, whom Mayweather had previously defeated, managed to turn the tables in the 1996 Olympic Trials.
- Serafim Todorov: The most controversial loss came in the 1996 Olympic semifinals against Todorov, a decision many felt was unjustly awarded against Mayweather.
The Unlikely Rematch: Mayweather vs. John Gotti III
Years later, an undefeated professional career behind him, Mayweather is stepping back into the ring August 24th in Mexico city for an exhibition match against John Gotti III.
Their initial encounter in June 2023 ended in chaos, with a brawl erupting in the ring.
Despite his amateur losses, Mayweather remains a formidable force in the ring. His experience, technical prowess, and strategic mind make him a tough opponent for anyone, including Gotti III.
Another Easy Pay Day For Money Mayweather
While Mayweather’s unbeaten professional record is a testament to his skill and dedication, it’s important to acknowledge the setbacks he faced early in his career.
These losses, rather than diminishing his achievements, highlight the journey he undertook to become one of boxing’s most celebrated figures.
As for the rematch with Gotti III, Mayweather won’t put himself in a position to lose.
Outside of his amateur career, he always wins in the end.
