Boxing News and Views spoke with Felix Tito Trinidad Nephew Joey Borrero after his latest professional lightweight fight.
The young American lightweight Joey Borrero went to Puerto Rico for his latest fight last Friday and got ready firstly alongside boxing royalty like his uncle Felix “Tito” Trinidad and more — as seen below in photos and on video in the corner:
Speaking to Borrero after he improved his professional boxing record to 12-1-9 KO he told Boxing News and Views:
“I was guided by my uncle — the Puerto Rican and world boxing Felix “Tito” Trinidad.
I trained hard at Lightings Boxing Club in Oakland, CA with Head Coach Kris Lopez. The father of David Lopez
Iván Calderón had my back, prepping me for war. Also and working my cornerFacing off against Luis May, a seasoned brawler with a record of 22-17-2 (updated record), in the lightweight division, a Mexican from Cancun he came in at 138 pounds (he was three pounds overweight), I showed up at 135 on weigh-in day, proving I’m all business.
When the bell rang, I brought the heat, dodging and throwing bombs like a boss. With the crowd screaming, I owned the ring, my victory a shout-out to my mentors, my grind, and the fighter’s spirit.”
Kudos to Borrero on his latest win.
A big win against a guy who came in over weight, too, to take into consideration.
Alas, Borrero is an exciting 27-year-old prospect with big punching fists with an improving defence, lots of grit, heart, stamina and will to be the best.
Now with a lot of experience gained in the sport, moreover.
BOXING NEWS: Turki Alalshikh Takeover of Boxing Continues
Fighting across the major fight nations in the highest level of boxing, professional boxing that is — of the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico now thus far in his professional tenure.
That type of experience in pro boxing is hard to get, and quite frankly, is invaluable.
It will prepare him well now with more of boxing legend Trinidad’s influence in his life and career.
That’s as good as it gets with him and all the team above mentioned as mentors.
Now with at last a consistent coaching team around him to sharpen his defence and technical elements of his fight game too — which is what he was missing in his career — and plenty of quality sparring too without getting in gym wars and leaving it in the gym.
Big things ahead now for Borrero.
A name to watch out for in the sport.
