Andy Ruiz On What He Was Thinking When On The Canvas Against Anthony Joshua

Andy Ruiz became the first ever Mexican heavyweight champion of the world when he beat Anthony Joshua.

Indeed he changed the modern heavyweight era in ways when he knocked out Joshua in Saudi Arabia in their first fight.

Speaking to Chris Mannix of DAZN Ruiz said of what was going on in his mind at the time:

“My coach usually says a dangerous fighter is when he is hurt. So I just went in there and did my all. I was throwing combinations and luckily the hook landed and it was on his temple and it changed the whole game. Just like I was saying it was the punch of the God’s. And I believe it because the whole time when I was on the canvas I asked God to give me the strength to give me the power to win. That’s what I was literally saying (to myself) when I was on the canvas. When I was breathing and what do you know, I got him with the hook and I dropped him and I was like what? I was so shocked.”

The rematch didn’t go his way and he concedes he enjoyed the win too much gaining 30 pounds before the rematch.

Next up Ruiz takes on Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller on August 3rd in LA on the Terence Crawford undercard.
