People will not believe how much more Oscar De La Hoya made in dollars than Mayweather did in their fight.
In the end Mayweather won a close split decision on the night in Las Vegas.
Going into the fight De La Hoya negotiated a far bigger slice of the pie that not many know about.
Speaking to Valuetainment Podcast De La Hoya revealed:
“No it was basically an even negotiation except for the purse. I believe I negotiated a 90/10 (split) for myself. I believe he made something like $8 million when all said in done. (I made) It had to be closer to $80 million.”
That’s a huge difference.
It was not until after this fight that Mayweather really starting making the big pay days and became ‘Money’ Mayweather.
The fact De La Hoya made $80 million and Mayweather made $8 million showing he made ten times more than Mayweather after all pay per view tallies came in months later, is stunning to say the least.
It shows you how stars are born in the sport after they beat a star first in the ring — oftentimes they take their fan base and forge ahead then — as Mayweather went on to and did after beating Oscar De La Hoya.
