Donald Trump’s first boxing match was not just any old fight it was one of the great all time prize fights.
It was billed ‘The Fight of the Century’ on March 8th 1971 at MSG, New York and Trump revealed people in the stands were actually having heart attacks as he looked on as a young kid in New York telling Theo Von:
“It was Joe Frazier Muhammad Ali in Madison Square Garden many years ago. I think that was like the first fight I ever went to. I always liked the boxing. (On his age) Oh boy you can deduct it from what I am now. But they were two undefeated fighters. They were both undefeated. They both became friends of mine. Muhammad became a friend of mine. So did Joe. Gentleman Joe. They were two great fighters. That fight was incredible. I think they had like many hear attacks that night, literal heart attacks in Madison Square Garden. The fight was unbelievable. Two undefeated heavyweight champions of the world. There was no UFC. There was no competition really. That was it. You had two guys. Remember Muhammad was not allowed to fight for many different things. He was a terrific guy. Both terrific guys. And they made it happen and you had two undefeated heavyweight champions fighting. I went with my father and my brother Robert. I must have been very young. You would never forget it, just one of those moments. There was many people having heart attacks in the arena. No the fight was just such a crazy event. I know a friend of mine, his father had a bad heart attack. (at the fight)”
There is something you don’t hear everyday.
Indeed, even watching the fight back in today’s times gives an insight into how it really is still one of the best heavyweight fights ever:
