Andre Ward the former pound for pound champion knows more about the sport on the inside than anyone.
Then a cruiserweight undefeated world champion, now a manager and adviser to Shakur Stevenson and with a lot of experience in his own pro boxing career, Ward knows the sport inside out.
Speaking on his popular podcast “All The Smoke Fight” Ward spoke on the two big names in boxing today:
“I struggle with one person saying they are the face of boxing because typically that person is that big. Even when Floyd (Mayweather) was the face of boxing and you will have Floyd tell you he’s still the face of boxing. But it’s hard because you are fighting like one or two times a year. I understand what you are saying, because you generate the most and when you think of the sport you think of me first, I understand that. But if it’s just you when you are not fighting them ten months other the year, or maybe you fight twice year, them other fix months of the year, then who’s else is standing the sport up? You’ve got guys that ain’t superstars but they are stars. Then you got guys that maybe below them maybe he’s a big name in the sport, maybe a few casuals know him. You’ve got different levels of notoriety. These guys are standing up the sport too. So that’s kind of how I feel about that. If I was asked about who is the face of boxing now I think it’s a two-headed monster right now. I think its Gervonta Davis. You cannot deny what he’s done. You cannot deny what he generates. You cannot deny the performances. And you also cannot deny what Canelo Alvarez has done for a very long time.”
He’s right you know.
Yes Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Usyk, Ryan Garcia and others are big stars in boxing but if you are looking at the top two, it probably at the moment is Canelo and “Tank” Davis.
