When it comes to amateur boxing and success at the highest level, professional boxing, none know more than Lennox Lewis.
A decorated amateur and world heavyweight champion.
Speaking to Sky Sports Lewis advised prospect Frazier Clarke and others moving to the pro game that:
“Well it’s easy. It’s like you filled your cup up as an amateur champion, now you want to be professional champion so it’s a refill of your cup. It ain’t going to come to you. You got to put in the time. You got to put in the effort. So then you’re going to know what to work on. So if you’re sitting there and you’re boxing and you’re feet are in quick sand, that’s no way to box — you ain’t going to get too far that way.”
Interesting that Lewis focused on footwork more than any other area to focus on for amateurs moving into the pro ranks.
Indeed, that is a fundamental of professional boxing.
