Promoter Eddie Hearn reacts below to former world champion Sunny Edwards retiring at a very young age after losing to Yafai.
Galal Yafai stopped Edwards this weekend in a big win for him.
Speaking to the Stomping Ground Podcast Hearn said:
“On Sunny Edwards announcing his retirement at 28: He’s had an outspoken career, been in brilliant fights, and has had a shorter career compared to some, but I love it when a fighter shows that kind of honesty and says, “I’m done.” It’s not a game you want to stay in if you’re not hungry anymore, and he’s shown the courage to step away when he’s not fully invested. It’s really refreshing. He’s had huge fights, made a lot of money, and I’m sure he’ll have a future in commentary because he’s great at it. I thought he spoke really well in the ring afterward.
Was he easy to work with, though? He was easy to work with because he wanted the big fights. He wanted the big money, and we delivered for him.”
Good luck to Edwards in whatever is next.
Great career and great fighter over the years for boxing fans.
