Lennox Lewis Expects In Usyk vs Fury 2

Former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis is in town for Usyk vs Fury 2 and has been giving some insightful punditry before the big fight.

The rematch for the heavyweight championship of the world, the undisputed championship, takes place between Usyk and Fury once more this weekend on Saturday in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to TNT Sports Lewis said:

“Could you tell me how this fight could surpass the last one for you?
How could it top the last fight for me? Well, the Usyk vs. Tyson Fury fight could be significantly better with more punches being thrown right from the first round. There’s likely to be a lot of movement from both fighters as they figure each other out in that opening round. Even though they’ve fought before, they’ll still want to analyze each other’s tactics early on.

I expect Tyson to be doing a lot of movement—jerking, jabbing, and keeping active. As the fight progresses, it could turn into a more intense, back-and-forth exchange. When you see two skilled boxers engage in a brawl, you can expect plenty of counterpunches, jabs, power punches, lefts, and rights. That’s how it could really surpass the previous fight for me.

What would you like to see from Fury this time?
Good question. What I’d like to see from Fury this time is more use of his jab, asserting himself better, throwing that right hand, and not moving as much as he did in the last fight.

What do you think of his approach this time, given it seems to be such a shift from his personality earlier in the year?
His personality, to me, tends to fluctuate. Right now, he’s in fight mode, and for Fury, that means a lot of talking. He’s declared that he’s going to knock out Alexander Usyk this time. It looks like he’s put on some weight, which might increase his punching power. He’ll likely focus on throwing heavy punches early on. I just hope he doesn’t exhaust himself because missing those power punches can drain a lot of energy. He’ll need to be very accurate.

Do you think he needs to avoid body shots?
Yes, definitely. Body shots are especially draining—they sap your energy quickly. Usyk is likely to target Fury’s body, as it’s a common strategy against bigger fighters. They say, “Hit a big guy in the body, and the head will fall.” That could very well be Usyk’s approach.

From your experience, do fighters’ pre-fight attitudes—whether outlandish, happy, smiling, or fierce—impact their mental performance going into the fight?
That’s a good question. Everyone reacts and prepares differently. For me, I preferred staying quiet, resting, and mentally preparing myself. I would go into my own head and focus on what I needed to do.

What do you think of the AI judge as a new addition?
The AI judge could be either a positive or negative development. I need to see how it performs to form a real opinion. People are often afraid of new technology, but I’m not. What matters is whether it works in the best interest of the boxers.

Do you think it could bring a positive impact to boxing?
I hope so. If the AI judge scores fights fairly and accurately, it could have a positive impact on the sport. I’m curious to see how the technology functions in practice.

Can you talk me through how you picture the fight going?
I think the first round will be about both fighters getting a sense of each other. I don’t think Fury will move as much as he did in their previous fight, as he knows he needs to establish control early on. He’ll need to win at least eight out of the 12 rounds to claim victory.

How do you think it’s going to end?
I’m a fan of trilogies, and I believe Tyson Fury is taking this fight more seriously. He wants to win. However, Usyk is undefeated, a great fighter, and moves exceptionally well. It’ll come down to who is sharper on the night—who lands the better punches and seizes critical moments.

How many rounds do you see it going, and will it end via knockout or on points?
I think it might end in a knockout. Both fighters seem highly motivated and have likely trained harder for this fight, given its importance.

Who do you think will deliver the knockout?
The fighter who seizes the right moment will deliver the knockout. If Usyk breaks Fury down, tires him out, and finds an opening, he could land a decisive shot. Conversely, Fury could land the perfect punch to hurt Usyk and follow through for the finish.

Who do you want to win?
I want the best fighter to win. It’s about having the best representative for heavyweight boxing. Both are excellent fighters, and this is set to be a truly incredible event.”

Lewis expecting a knockout is interesting.

Certainly both fighters are very up for this fight, even more so than the last one.

The last one was an awesome fight as well, so you can imagine how good a fight this is going to be on Saturday night.
