Weight Classes Exist For A Reason

Weight Classes Exist For A Reason

As 2025 gets underway in a magnificent year for the sport it is important to keep things in perspective when it comes to pound for pound in boxing.

In recent years the pound for pound mythical list has become more competitive than ever.

And that’s great, great for fans and the sport, to see the level of world champions increasing all the time.

But there are limits to it too.

When Canelo Alvarez stepped up against Dmitry Bivol in recent years being a case in point.

Manny Pacquiao won world titles in eight divisions which will never be done again, it is as simple as that.

Sometimes fighters sticking at their own weight classes and making defences of their titles at the weight is just as impressive if done over a long period of time.

But those who chase greatness like Canelo and others who step up in weight are truly some of the sport’s great champions, alas.
