Lennox Lewis Brutally Honest With Carl Froch

Lennox Lewis Brutally Honest With Carl Froch

Former world champion Carl Froch who once knocked out George Groves in front of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium is doing big things since retiring.

Namely smashing up the podcast world to absolute pieces and becoming one of the biggest podcasts in the entire world of professional sport quickly, not only in boxing.

Speaking at the 2024 Ring Magazine Awards with all-time great Lennox Lewis, Lewis had some banter and brutal honesty for Froch on all things boxing:

“Hi, I’m Carl “The Cobra”, and today I’m joined by none other than the legendary Lennox Lewis. How are you, my friend?

Lennox: I’m good. Last time we hung out, we were in Jamaica, right?

Carl: Yes! David Haye was there too, and I think Dizzee Rascal joined us as well.

Lennox: Oh, that’s right. We had a great time. We drove from your place. We stopped to have some snapper fish on the beach. They were pulling it straight out of the sea and grilling it right there.

Carl: That was amazing. I even had a chocolate brownie, and let me tell you, it was something special.

Lennox: I didn’t have the brownie, but it sounds like you enjoyed it!

Carl: Definitely. So, we’re here at the Ring Magazine Awards in London. Last month, I was in Saudi Arabia for another Ring Magazine event. Turki Alalshikh really knows how to put on a fantastic ceremony.

Lennox: Absolutely. It’s about time boxers are recognized like this. He’s doing great work, organizing events and promoting big fights.

Carl: Right, he’s really pushing the sport forward. Have you seen those cinematic pre-fight productions on the Ring Magazine YouTube channel? They’re incredible.

Lennox: Yeah, they’re next level. Most broadcasters don’t invest in that kind of production, but it’s good for the sport.

Carl: Okay, let’s get into it. First up, favorite TV show ever?

Lennox: Starsky and Hutch. I used to run home to watch that.

Carl: I thought you might say something like Curb Your Enthusiasm!

Lennox: Oh, I love Larry David too, but Starsky and Hutch was my favorite back in the day.

Carl: Next, favorite boxer of all time?

Lennox: Muhammad Ali, no question.

Carl: Was it his style in the ring or what he did outside of it?

Lennox: Both. He was a true icon. He taught me the importance of hitting and not getting hit.

Carl: What about your favorite current boxer?

Lennox: I’d say Gervonta Davis and Terence Crawford. Both are exceptional fighters.

Carl: Agreed. Crawford’s a cool guy, too. We had a great chat recently.

Carl: Who’s better at chess—you or me?

Lennox: Me, definitely.

Carl: I held my own last time!

Lennox: You did, but I’ve been playing since I was a kid. I even play on my phone during flights.

Carl: That’s great. I’ve started teaching my son to play chess—it’s good for his focus and discipline.

Carl: Next question—favorite food after a fight?

Lennox: I never ate after a fight. I’d just have champagne to celebrate. But my mom used to cook Jamaican food for me: chicken, rice, oxtail, or curry goat.

Carl: That sounds delicious. Let’s talk about your toughest opponent.

Lennox: Evander Holyfield. That was a proper fight.

Carl: What about your fight with Vitali Klitschko? That was a war.

Lennox: It was tough, but I enjoyed it. My friends loved it too because it was such a back-and-forth battle.

Carl: Who wins—Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury?

Lennox: Fury has the edge right now, but it’s up to Joshua to prove people wrong.

Carl: Who would you spar with if you could pick any retired boxer?

Lennox: Daniel Dubois. He’s a good fighter with a solid right hand.

Carl: Describe Lennox Lewis in three words.

Lennox: Big, tall, and handsome.

Carl: Can’t argue with that!

Carl: Top three British boxers of the last 25 years?

Lennox: I’ll put myself at number one, of course. Joe Calzaghe would be in there too.

Carl: If you could relive one fight, which would it be?

Lennox: I’d say the Klitschko fight. I wasn’t at my best, but I still won.

Carl: Final round—how many people attended Wembley Stadium when I fought George Groves?

Lennox: A lot of people.

Carl: 80,000!

Lennox: That’s impressive.

Carl: It’s been amazing chatting with you. When’s our chess rematch?

Lennox: Let’s do it in Jamaica!

Carl: You’re on. Thanks, Lennox!

Lennox: Anytime, my friend.”

Good to see he places Joe Calzaghe so high up on his list.

Interesting on Holyfield being his toughest fight.

As for Calzaghe, like Steve Collins of Dublin, Ireland, in many ways, never quite gets the credit he deserves in super-middleweight boxing history.
