Many thought it would be UK heavyweight Derek Chisora’s last fight in boxing but this suggests maybe not.
Chisora won a bloody battle with Otto Wallin tonight in the UK, dropping Wallin on route to winning a unanimous decision points victory.
Speaking in the ring after the fight to the fans ‘Del Boy’ said:
“Otto Wallin was a good fighter. I thought he was going to gas out, but he didn’t, no, he proved me wrong. He carried on. When I arrived, I said to myself, I won’t cry. Oh bro, I started crying like a baby. I was in tears because I love the sport and I love the fans and I love every promo about it on TV, everything about it, the ups and downs. So for me, it was a very emotional day today, you know. My wife said, “I wish I was there.” I said, “No, I don’t want you to, look after the kids.” You know, it was a hard fight. I’m not going to lie to you; it was very hard when I got the cut, and then something happened in the third round which I didn’t tell my trainers. I said, “Let me carry on,” because both of my ears had popped. Now I can feel them in the first round, in the second round, and I said, “I’m going to show it. I’m just going to carry on,” push and do what I need to do.”
He added:
“Legacy is not made by me; it’s made by the fans. Why they like you, I think I’ll be in a legacy Hall of Fame when I’m dead, do you understand? Yeah, not now. It’s the fans who choose for me to be a legacy of the United Kingdom, and I love it. I love every aspect of it, bro.”
Alas, Chisora rolled back the years against all the odds tonight in a big win for him in what was thought to be his swansong.
It would be great for him to retire on a victory like this tonight and pursue new horizons in life, what a way to end his professional fighting career if so.
That said, afterwards on X he suggested this might not be the case posting:
“This game I love it. Who’s next? #fight49”
