It has been a heck of a journey for Shakur Stevenson ahead of his latest fight this weekend.
A decorated amateur, now a world champion, his story in boxing goes way back to long before that however.
Speaking to the Ring Magazine podcast Shakur Stevenson said on how it all began with his grandfather:
“Actually, when I was five, he used to play baseball, but it was like minor league baseball, not worldwide. He took (grandfather) me to a lot of his baseball games, but I used to always see him leave the house all the time to go places, and I used to really wonder where he was going. Then, when we went to a baseball game, he brought three of his fighters with him and introduced me to them. When he introduced me to them, I felt like it was just so cool that they were boxers, and they knew how to protect themselves and fight. So, the next day, I asked him if I could go to the gym, and he took me there, and it’s been the love of my life ever since.”
A wise decision it proved to be, furthermore.
This weekend he defends his WBC lightweight championship against Floyd Schofield on one of the best boxing cards that there ever was, ever, in the history of professional boxing on Saturday night.
