Boxing fans will surely be taking note of boxing legend Joe Calzaghe possibly being brought out of retirement.
The one fight before he retired unbeaten and beat Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins that everyone wanted to see was against world champion Carl Froch.
Both are retired now but Froch revealed on his podcast some eyebrow raising stuff — including the Calzaghe fight offer recently:
“Absolutely. I sat down with Turki Alalshikh and did an interview—you’ve probably seen it. He gets giddy around boxing—he loves it. He was talking about Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler—those fights. I thought, “He actually knows his boxing.” He talked about Arturo Gatti, Mickey Ward, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales. I thought, “Fair play to Turki.” He’s been given a job to promote boxing—like the Saudis are doing with golf, snooker, LIV Golf, and other sports. Turki’s obviously been chosen as the minister for sport for that job because he’s a genuine boxing fan. Fair play to him.”
On the Calzaghe fight offer recently he went on:
“It (boxing) frustrates him. He actually offered Joe Calzaghe a big bag to fight me recently—he told me about that. I think it was around the time I was criticizing the atmosphere in Saudi Arabia. He must have gotten on the phone to Calzaghe and thought, “Can you give this [expletive] Froch a beating? I want to shut him up!” Maybe that’s what he wanted. But people probably look at Turki Alalshikh and just think he’s a guy with money, backed by the Saudi government, trying to get the biggest fights. I think that annoys him. I get the impression he’s a big boxing fan—genuinely loves the sport. You need more people with deep pockets like him involved. I wish he’d been involved six, seven, or eight years ago when I was in my prime—and you too.”
Froch makes some good points — the thing is — boxing is only getting started now — the near future and after that will be big.
Froch didn’t elaborate further just yet on the big money offer for the Calzaghe fight, it would great to hear from Calzaghe on this soon.
Calzaghe has been happily retired for some time though, it would surely need to be a big offer to get him out of bed to train in the morning.
What a fight it would be though — even at this stage.
Not only in the UK and Europe but worldwide.
Calzaghe is a legend of boxing and so is Froch as a former world champion.
The thing is Froch is big in the news as well with his hugely successful podcast and YouTube channel.
So this is relevant and unexpected, bring it on if it can happen.
