Soon Devin Haney takes on Jose Ramirez in a huge card, a first ever no less at Times Square in New York.
If he wins which is not guaranteed, a big fight against Ryan Garcia is what awaits for both if they both win on the same card, a not easy task for either though, it must be noted for balance.
Haney makes his debut at 147lbs. on the bill happening in early May.
Speaking to Ring Magazine ahead of the fight Haney said of it:
“I think I’m going to feel better. I think I’ll be much better, much stronger. I’m naturally a bigger guy. I can make 140, but it’s just—I’ll feel more comfortable at this catchweight. It’s at 144, so I’m excited about that. A lot of people are anticipating this fight against Ramirez being a boxing match. I talked to him earlier today, and he said, “I’m going to go in there and try to knock him out.” That’s the mentality he’s bringing. He feels like his back is against the wall, with a lot of people talking about retirement for him. Have we ever seen him not do that? Is that his only style of fighting—to go in, come forward, and try to apply pressure?”
Haney has been measured in his responses later, talking less and giving more limited responses, but more apt when he does.
All good signs his mentality is improving and is in a good place in his training at the moment.
Physically the move to welterweight is no joke and the power they hit with there will surely be an eye opener but something he will be ready for.
What an outstanding card in early May this is, truly, what a time for Times Square and New York to have big time boxing come to it like this.
