Lamont Roach was actively talking to Gervonta Davis mid fight but up until now it was not known what he was saying to him mid fight.
That changed with a sit down with one of the great fighters in history — Andre ‘SOG’ Ward.
Speaking to Andre Ward on Ward’s podcast All The Smoke — Roach said:
“I’m not lying after he hit me I landed a clean body shot and he said, ‘I thought you hit harder than that.’ I was like, ‘Man, I thought you hit harder than that. You’re supposed to be a knockout artist!’ That’s what I told him. I said, ‘I thought you hit harder than that.’ Then he was like ‘Alright, watch.’ The round ended and he said, ‘Watch.’ I went back to my corner and told them ‘I got him.’”
He added:
“The next round he came out trying to hit me hard. I saw it coming. You can go back and watch the tape. He threw a big left. I blocked it but he hit me with two body shots trying to put everything into them. I was like ‘It’s over.’ I thought, ‘The only way he’s gonna get me is if he lands something super accurate.’ But I wasn’t afraid of that happening.”
Clearly Roach did not allow ‘Tank’ to get into his head before or during the fight.
With that being said, Davis will have learned a lot about the fight style of Roach in there on the night.
He is already back training for the rematch which will happen this summer.
Davis has been training recently with none other than Ray Leonard and needs the eye of the Tiger back.
