Devin Haney embracing bad guy persona boxing as bad guy marketing strikes again with this latest from Haney — his remarks show his clear intent below.
He isn’t the first in boxing nor will be the last in the fight business to do this, mind you.
Per Boxing Kingdom and Ring Magazine on X:
“That’s when Floyd became the big star, when he became the villain. I think the same way. That’s when I will become a massive star now that I am crossing over. People want to see me lose now. They want to pay to see me lose. So I am happy.” [@ringmagazine]
Shrewd Haney.
Alas, some big stars in the sport are attempting this now.
Only some succeed. Haney’s father Bill Haney is a big part also of Haney’s career in terms of marketing and so on.
Of course at the same time there are also many genuine good guys in the sport like Canelo Alvarez, Bivol, Beterbiev, Gervonta Davis, Anthony Joshua and Usyk who are big stars who don’t need to do this.
Haney takes on Jose Ramirez next up on May 2nd on a huge night of boxing at Times Square.
